Safety first
Disconnecting power does not make every appliance component safe. Microwaves and some electronic systems can retain dangerous voltage. Stop immediately if a check requires moving a gas connection, opening a sealed system, bypassing a safety device, or working beyond the owner's manual.
Reasonable checks for homeowners
- Confirm that the appliance has power and that a breaker has not tripped
- Check that water or gas shutoffs are in the correct operating position without disturbing the connection
- Clean an owner-accessible filter, lint screen, or spray arm according to the manual
- Confirm that a door closes fully and that controls are not locked
- Record the complete model number and any displayed error code
Work that should be left to a technician
Internal electrical testing, microwave components, gas valves and connections, sealed refrigeration systems, heavy appliance disassembly, and repairs that expose sharp or moving parts need the right tools and procedures. A part can appear faulty while the real cause is elsewhere in the system.
Consider warranty coverage first
If the appliance may have a manufacturer, extended, home-warranty, or third-party service contract, contact that provider before authorizing outside work. An unauthorized repair can affect coverage or create a bill the warranty company will not reimburse.
Repair or replace
Age is only one part of the decision. Consider the diagnosed failure, repair price, parts availability, appliance condition, installation cost, and how well the machine met the household's needs before it failed. A clear diagnosis makes that comparison more useful.
