What the symptom can mean
Maytag washers include multiple top-load and front-load platforms with different drive and control systems. Water left in the tub can prevent spin, and a lid or door signal can stop the machine before the drive ever starts. We identify the platform from the model and follow the actual failure through the cycle.

Find the model number: Look beneath the top-load washer lid or around the front-load door opening. Photograph the complete model and serial number.
Straight answers
The washer may not have drained, confirmed the lid or door lock, balanced the load, or received the expected drive feedback. Drain, lock, suspension, motor, drive, wiring, and control conditions can all be involved.
A foreign object, pump, drive component, bearing, basket contact, or motor-related problem can create grinding. Note whether the sound occurs during wash, drain, or spin because each stage points to different systems.
Do not run the washer again if it is leaking, smells hot, or makes a severe mechanical noise. Otherwise, save the code and describe exactly where the cycle stops rather than repeatedly resetting it.
